Art Education...why?

The arts teach children to make good judgments about qualitative relationships.
Unlike much of the curriculum in which correct answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that prevail.
The arts teach children that problems can have more than one solution and that questions can have more than one answer.
The arts celebrate multiple perspectives.
One of their large lessons is that there are many ways to see and interpret the world.
The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem solving purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and opportunity. Learning in the arts requires the ability and a willingness to surrender to the unanticipated possibilities of the work as it unfolds.
The arts make vivid the fact that neither words in their literal form nor number exhaust what we can know. The limits of our language do not define the limits of our cognition.
The arts teach students that small differences can have large effects.
The arts traffic in subtleties.
The arts teach students to think through and within a material.
All art forms employ some means through which images become real.
The arts help children learn to say what cannot be said.
When children are invited to disclose what a work of art means, it helps them feel they must reach into their poetic capacities to find the words that will do the job.
The arts enable us to have an experience we can't have from any other source.
Through such experiences we discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.
The position of art in the school curriculum symbolizes to the young what adults believe is important.

Interest in Public Art?

I am organizing a forum to discuss Public Art and its purpose in Kentucky and Tennessee. The forum will also include a discussion concerning the most efficient Request for Proposals (RFP) and Request for Qualifications (RFQ) requirements and formats. Please let me know of your interest in attending or participating in this upcoming forum.

"Public art is a mirror that reflects the local environment, cultural values, and artistic vitality of the community in which it exists. At its best, public art is more than just art installed in public places. It is a community-based process of dialogue, involvement, and participation. Public art enhances the quality of life for citizens by encouraging a heightened sense of place, enhancing a community's prestige, and enlivening the visual quality of the built environment. Successful public art is site-specific and responds to the concept of place-making."

Cheekwood's Scarecrows!

Andee worked with Don Evans and the Little Marrowbone Repair Corporation to complete Kakashi Jorou...a Geisha Scarecrow for the Scarecrows! at Cheekwood Art & Gardens in Nashville, TN.

SCARECROWS!

September 29 - November 4
www.cheekwood.org

Get ready for some good old-fashioned fall fun at Cheekwood! Scarecrows will showcase dozens of fabulous, weird, funny, and traditional scarecrows lurking along the Garden paths.

For the Birds
Hungry birds have always been a problem for farmers. Birds, such as crows, sometimes ate so much corn or wheat that farmers did not have enough food to last through the winter. So, for more than 3,000 years, farmers have been making scarecrows. As long as birds are hungry, farmers will still look for ways to SCARECROWS!

While we know our straw-filled friends as scarecrows, the protective characters have many different names. In Britain, they are called mommets, tattie bogies and hodmedods. Other places around the world scarecrows are known as jack-of-straws, scarebirds, and shoy-hoys.

Scarecrow Stories
(or Stories of Scarecrow, which do you like better)
The scarecrow is one of the most familiar figures of the rural landscape not only in the United States but throughout the world. His ragged figure has been recorded in rural history for centuries. We think of scarecrows as human-like figures stuffed with straw, but farmers have invented many different "scarecrows" to protect their crops over the years.

The first scarecrows in recorded history were placed along the Nile River to protect wheat fields from flocks of quail. Egyptian farmers covered wooden frames with fishing nets. The farmers hid in the fields and scared the quail into the nets.

Japanese farmers also began making scarecrows to protect their rice fields. The farmers hung old rags, meat, and fish bones from bamboo poles in their fields and then set them on fire. The smell was so bad that birds, and all other living creatures, stayed far away from the crops. The Japanese farmers called their scarecrows kakashis, which literally means something that smells bad.

In Medieval Britain, their scarecrows weren't made from wood or bamboo, but were live boys and girls. Known as bird scarers or bird shooers, they patrolled wheat fields carrying bags of stones. If crows landed in the fields, they would chase them off by waving their arms and throwing the stones.

Fathom exhibition-Chattanooga, TN

Connect 12 opens Sept.1

Featured in the Nashville Scene's Critic's Picks:
CONNECT 12 This exhibit, curated by Ben Vitualla, features the diverse works of 12 of Nashville's longtime arts warriors. The goal of the exhibit is to educate the viewer about the history and continued growth of our local arts community. Painter Andee Rudloff has exhibited with Untitled Artists and Plowhaus Artists' Cooperative, in addition to being involved with the successful Arts in the Airport program. Her dreamy landscapes are meant to reflect a sense of memory. Untitled's husband-and-wife teams are also included in the September exhibit. Alesandra Bellos is "giving away her dreams" in a performance art piece at the opening reception. Her husband, Rick Bradley, is doing an interactive piece featuring monitors showing repeated imagery that explores the idea of machines expressing emotions. Eric Denton will exhibit his quirky photographs in the show alongside wife Tiffany Denton's fiber collages. Audience participation is encouraged in three installations and one performance art piece. With the majority of Art at the Arcade spaces having stellar shows opening this month and the McKay Otto/Monica Cook show at TAG, downtown is the place to be this Saturday night. Opening reception 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 1 at Dangenart Gallery; runs through Sept. 28.

Act Like a GRRRL!

Andee facilitated a collaborative painting project with the teen artists involved in "Act Like a GRRRL." The murals will be displayed during the final performances on June 28th and June 29th.

"Act Like a GRRRL is all about teenage girls finding their voices -- through writing, dancing, performance. This year, I want to add a visual art component... so, I was wondering if Andee would come and talk to them about what she does and then maybe lead them through an exercise where they get to paint a little -- finding their "voice" on the canvas."
-Vali Forrester

The girls spent hours discussing, drawing and painting in order to create 3 unique and incredible murals.

Come support Director Vali Forrester and the multi-talented teen artists on Thursday, June 28th and Friday, June 29th at Belmont University.

Beshear for Governor!

Steve Beshear should be the next Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and Andee Rudloff and other artists choose to support Beshear/Mongiardo in their effort to lead the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Here is a quote from Steve's Change for Kentucky Endorsement Questionnaire:

Imagine Kentucky ten years from now. What do you hope you will see?

"Ten years from now, I see a Kentucky where every child is receiving an education which will prepare them for the jobs of the future - where every person has access to affordable health care - where good jobs with good benefits are available to all - in short, when every man, woman, boy and girl have the opportunity to realize the American Dream. I see a Kentucky which is more tolerant of differences and which accomplishes all of these goals while protecting and preserving the environment for future generations."

Cheekwood announces Summer designs

Cheekwood announces designs for summer exhibition

Cheekwood Botanical Garden & Museum of Art recently selected ten designs for its seventh annual 2007 summer exhibition: "Once Upon a Garden.''

Opening May 26 and running through September 9, "Once Upon a Garden'' focuses on the magical world of classic children's stories with "storybook settings" in the landscape at Cheekwood.

"The originality and adventurous spirit of this year's designs are amazing," said Jack Becker, president/CEO of Cheekwood. "Our goal is for families to come to Cheekwood to enjoy themselves through discovery and exploration."

Previous exhibitions have included Playhouses and Forts, Terrific Treehouses, and most recently, Birdhouse Bonanza. This year's designers include:

-Luke Tidwell and Barclay Dwight of Nashville for "Hansel and Gretel,'' a contemporary interpretation of the candy house the witch used to lure Hansel and Gretel into danger.

Children will be able to slide the panels and create the image and house of their desires.

-The owners of the Shops at the Loveless, Shimai Pottery, Curious Heart Emporium, Trace Bikes and Ruthie Cherry Fine Art in Nashville, for "Alice in Wonderland,'' a wonderland for a garden tea party and croquet.

-Annie Freeman, Elizabeth Garner, Ron Ames, Elder Jones, Michelle Webber, Alan Le Quire, Jammie Williams, Elaine Wood, Mervyn Enguidanos, Bob Scarlatta, and Andee Rudloff of Nashville for "The Frog Prince,'' a dazzling giant crown that children can enter and read the magical story of transformation that comes from confronting our fears and fulfilling our promises.

-Brian Parker and Scott Gubala of Nashville for "Wind in the Willows,'' featuring "pop-up book" inspired scenes gathered from moments in Kenneth Grahame's enchanting tale.

-Sandy Zeigler of Nashville for "Goldilocks and the Three Bears,'' a fantasy for children, a garden folly for adults.

-Adrienne Outlaw, Alicia Beach, Sher Fick, Lisa Bachman, Matthew Rogers, Amanda Crawford, Selena Long and Jessica Cantrell of Nashville for "Peter Rabbit,'' inviting children of all ages to experience Peter's fantastical journey by exploring above ground, child-size vegetable garden filled with colorful, woven-wire broccoli, carrots, asparagus and more.

-Babs Freeman, Harriet McHenry, and Susan Ward for "Jack and the Beanstalk,'' where a castle is suspended in the tree with a beanstalk going from Jack's House to the castle and children will be able to plant their own "magic beans" in Jack's house.

-Dryden Abernathy Architecture Design (DA|AD) including Nick Dryden, John Abernathy, James Bagwell, Kim Martin, Brad Northcutt, Crispin Mathias-Fisher and Jacklyn Abernathy for "The Secret Garden,'' an assemblage of garden delights offering a different perspective of what can be perceived as a garden.

-Gresham Smith and Partners: Healthcare Studio Team: Beryl Alder, Vanessa Paz, Bryan Tuttle, David Zegley, Adam Smith, Jerry Culp, Lara Eley and Aron Thompson for "Swiss Family Robinson,'' a conceptual tree house with platforms that represent climactic events in the book.

-Susan Jane Hall, Steve Drake, and Luke Tidwell of Nashville for "Anansi,'' depicting Anansi, a magical spider character from African mythology, as he presents the moon to Nyame, the sky God.

Cheekwood inspires and educates by making art, horticulture and nature accessible to a diverse community.

Dovie's makes our day

Yesterday, my dad hurt his back. A couple of his clients thought they would cheer him up by bringing him the best burgers in Kentucky...fresh DOVIE's...and a T-shirt to boot! Although I am vegetarian, I can say from my younger years that this is the best burger in America. My dad shared the bag-o-burgers with me and others...I shared my burgers with a friend who has spent time on a Montana ranch, and she said...they were really ggrrrreat!

Dovie's located in Tompkinsville, Kentucky has welcomed people inside for over 50 years. The Moore family founded Dovie's in 1940 and keeps the restaurant true to it's history with a menu that has the original Dovie's burger and a few other tasty surprises. Deep-frying and a secret sauce is the specialty at Dovie's. Dedicated locals have made this restaurant almost legendary.

At Home On Tour/The Dinner Party updates

In 2001, Andee worked with Judy Chicago for a semester on a major installation called "At Home: A Kentucky Project with Judy Chicago and Donald Woodman" (her husband). Following the close of the exhibition, John Oakes and Andee created a traveling exhibition called the At Home On Tour which is currently (Spring 2007) at Penn State University.

Have you heard that Judy Chicago's Dinner Party has a permanent home, in the Brooklyn Museum?

Patrick Fleming remembered

Last autumn, I lost my artist soulmate, Patrick. At his Memorial in NYC we gathered at his home, shared stories, with blurry eyes - we all wished we were dreaming and would wake up to see his bright, shining smile. As the sun came down on the day, we all gathered by the river...by him...to thank him for being part of our lives. Each of us had a fresh rose to float down the windy river...and the river and the wind blew them right back to us...and he let us know he was right there, he was there that day. Finally, we lit a small urn ablaze that was full of messages and wishes for Patrick and it soared and sparked. So many tears...so so so many tears.

An artist, a dear sweet man and my friend...Lawrence Patrick Fleming.
I will miss him.

Gilda's Club - Nashville

Gilda's Club of Nashville has been a wonderful support to me and my family over the past few months. To thank the club, and honor my brave mother, I have decided to donate Pearl Sun (pictured above) to their permanent collection. I am also excited to be donating to their fundraiser which will be held in June of 2007.

Gilda's Club Nashville is an affiliate of Gilda's Club Worldwide and opened its doors on August 3, 1998. Our purpose is to offer to our members lectures, workshops, classes, support groups and social activities in a non-residential, homelike setting. Free of charge to everyone, Gilda's Club Nashville provides a gathering place where people with cancer and their families and friends can join with others to actively involve themselves in building social and emotional support as a supplement to regular medical care.

If you have cancer or have a friend or loved one who does, Gilda's Club Nashville is here for all of you.

About Gilda Radner:

When comedian Gilda Radner was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986 she quickly realized the importance of emotional and social support when dealing with her cancer. After attending a wellness community in California, Gilda called for such places of participation, education, hope and friendship to be made available to men, women and children with any type of cancer and their families and friends. Upon her death in May of 1989 her husband, Gene Wilder, and Joanna Bull (Gilda's psychotherapist) founded the flagship Gilda's Club at 195 West Houston in New York City. There are currently fifteen affiliates open and another fifteen in various stages of development.

Curator's statement:

Andee Rudloff's modern depictions of mountains, hills, pastures and clouds are expressively characterized by her use of color and composition.

Her passion for painting, and the majestic flow of nature, are evident in the bold and unconstrained choice of bright colors. Rudloff's paintings carry the spirit of the place where she paints, also reminding us of a strong sense of vitality; this is especially true of her pictures depicting clouds bursting, prismatic skies and channels of water.

The artist explains, "When creating the works for this exhibition, I was influenced by the feeling of flight and the perplexity of life. As I fly in an aircraft, I am constantly in search of the horizon line. As I go through life, I am also searching for the "horizon line," as I deal with things that are out of my control. In this series of works, I investigate my emotions, feelings and happenings within each landscape while allowing the unpredictability of life to play a role."

In recent years, Rudloff has visited places all over the US and far western China. She has had solo and group exhibitions and participated in several cultural and academic exchanges. Her work can be found in corporate collections, private collections as well as exhibitions throughout the US, Great Britain and Japan.

She also serves as the Curator of the well-known Arts at the Airport program at Nashville International Airport. Rudloff decisively leads the program while ushering through exciting changes coming with the new multi-million dollar terminal renovation.

Opening reception Thursday, March 22nd from 5-7pm
Exhibition runs through April 13th, 2007.

The Quiet World-photography by Stacey Irvin

ARTIST'S RECEPTION: Saturday, February 3, from 6-8 p.m. FREE and open to the public.

The Parthenon's East Gallery will exhibit the work of Nashville photographer Stacey Irvin from February 3-April 14, 2007. In this exhibit, Irvin explores the people and landscapes of two seemingly different places: Beaverhead County, Montana, and the Xinjiang Province in Northwestern China. Rather than emphasizing cultural differences, Irvin's photographs underscore the similarities that make us all human. Susan Shockley, Curator, notes that "in the face of devastating worldwide news about our earth's inhabitants, Irvin captures a contentment about her subjects, even as they face difficult living conditions. That is her strength. She finds something deeper in her photographs than what we see on the nightly news."

Irvin is an award-winning photographer and graphic designer living in Nashville, Tennessee. She has traveled worldwide in pursuit of new experiences, recording them with her camera. In 1999, after graduating with a B.A. in Philosophy from Vanderbilt University, she received the prestigious Margaret Stonewall Wooldridge Hamblet Award from Vanderbilt's Fine Arts Department. With funds from the Hamblet award, Irvin embarked on a four-month photographic journey through parts of Asia, and returned to Northwestern China five years later. In 2003 she spent a month at the family-owned and -run cattle ranch in Southwestern Montana.

Alterscape

I wanted to express my respect and admiration to the The Basement Gallery in Knowville, TN, for Alterscape. I also respect the choices of Curator T. Michael Martin. The exhibition was intensely exciting and full of excellent images. If there is not a catalog of this show, there should be. (Maybe I will try to work to help put something together.)
I would also love to see this exhibition travel to other locations...email the gallery!

Heck...a review may follow.
